The real challenge was at night when I was really hungry but could not have any snacks. I drank water to fill myself up and it sustained me for a while. This allowed me to realize there are many people out there who do not have any food and that it is important not to waste food. As I wait to put my plates away and watching people throw away their food, it stroked me that all these wasted food could feed a lot of families.

Since there was no cross country practice today, I decided to eat more during lunch. For lunch I had half of a beef patty and grilled chicken. It tasted plain since I did not have it with the buns, sauce and vegetables. It was plain so I decided, as usual, to add salt to my food. At night, they served chicken verde and I had it with rice. As usual, I am not allowed to have any sort of drinks beside water.

Day Two
Today is the real challenge as they served my favorite fish taco. Although I usually have one since I am in cross country season, Today I had to skip it. For lunch I had an orange, banana and grilled chicken with corn from the salad bar. Besides food, I also had a cup of water. At night, I had spaghetti with meat balls and a cup of water.
Being limited to a small choice of food is really difficult as in our Webb life, we have a huge selection of food; from having desserts, main course, rice, sandwiches, salad bar, soup and many more. Even though a lot of students including myself complain about the food at Webb is terrible, I come to realizing we are actually really fortunate enough to be offered a variety of food. This helped me to appreciate that hard work that the dining hall staff put in everyday to serve us. Working in the dining hall is definitely one of the most persistent job here on campus.

Day One.
Day one on my limitation on food was difficult. Starting off with stir-fry for dinner was hard to resist to choose my favorite meat and toppings. I went with chicken with lettuce and no sauce since part of the plan was to limit to choices. Along with the dishes I had rice with my stir-fry. It was tasteless since I did not add any sauce in to my food. However, it was not that bad when salt was added. Drink was not a problem as I always drink water when I am thirsty. However, the major challenge was the pound cake as it is my favorite dessert. It was hard to resist but I pulled it off.
First day is really interesting as I thought this would be really easy. However, when I saw my favorite dessert, I found out that it is actually one of the hardest challenges. Especially when you are really hungry after cross country.

Into the Wild Experience
Food: McCandless had a limited food selection. Now experience it for yourself: limit yourself to a small set of foods: Choose two fruits (I.E.: oranges and apples), two vegetables (I.E.: lettuce and carrots), two grains (I.E.: bagels and pasta), and two sources of protein (I.E.: eggs and cheese). Drink only water. See how it feels to be limited. Some philosophers (like the ancient ones he mentions) say that limits are actually liberating. See for yourself.
Fruits: Banana and Orange
Vegetables: Corn and Lettuce
Grains: Bagels and Rice
Protein: Chicken and Beef
Drinks: Water
From this experience, it would teach me a lesson to appreciate the resources offered to me in my life. It would be interesting as I am also in cross country season which I have to watch what I eat. I think it would be difficult at the beginning since food played such a major role in my life and now I am being restricted.

What is
the meaning of life? To me, it is essential to always have a goal that we can
strive for in life. Challenges are also part of our lives; everyone will have
their struggle. Although we will face various challenges as our life goes on,
there will always be a way to fight through. It is pointless to live a life
without a goal. What is the point of living a life without something that you
want to achieve?
In the novel, The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemmingway, the characters belived that they are living the "life". Parties, alcohol, satisfaction, are the only elements that they want in their life. Living blindly every day, the characters do not have a specific goal to fight for or a direction to follow. They live a life where they would repeat themselves day to day just like how a turntable would repeat itself. They would wake up, drink with friends, party all night, wake up the next day and do the same exact things all over again. Without a sense of direction, why should we even live? Just like a dead man, the characters from The Sun Also Rises they are “dead” as they have no reason to live for. It is important to have a direction in our life.
